Who, Why, and How
The power of music is this: a great song can quickly transport you into a completely different state of mind - a few notes and you have those butterflies you felt during your first middle school slow dance; that feeling of the wind through your hair during the summer road trip with your bestie; or remind you of that time your mom turned up the stereo and played air guitar in her socks on the porch.
For me, nothing else has the power to so quickly evoke a sense of joy, longing, mystery, peace, or happiness that music can. It casts a spell… and the feeling of writing or performing a song that can have that type of indescribable, fundamental affect on a person is like lightning in a bottle - hard to capture and often frustrating, but eternally intriguing and at times sublimely rewarding.
The source of my passion for music is the feeling of tapping into that magic, and trying to communicate my unique life experiences, those deeply indescribable beautiful moments, the bittersweet pain of loving and losing, and the wonder and awe I feel about the natural world.
I’m not really special. Just another dude with a guitar trying to move beyond my ego and tap into that divine well of inspiration. But my story, and my songs, reflect the many years I spent as a child and young adult living and traveling internationally. They are drawn from the years I spent as a raft guide and kayaker on the rivers of California, on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, and in the jungles of the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Amazonian highlands. They are inspired by the deep love I have for skiing and rambling in the California Sierra Nevada and the Chilean and Argentine Andes. They tell the story of the recent loss of my stepfather and some of my closest friends, and the understanding of the impermanence of all things (and thus, relishing the beauty while we can!) And finally, they tell the story of my family - my parents, my amazing wife and kids, and the foundation of love that I stand upon.
Little Diamonds
The making of this first album, “Little Diamonds” came about as a challenge to myself on my 50th birthday - the first time that I have been brave or foolish or motivated enough to try to capture my musical ideas into an album format. It is world-music inspired, and includes a diverse range of songs from instrumental fingerstyle guitar arrangements to rock ballads, Indian ragas, afro-reggae themes, and other unique compositions. I collaborated closely on this project with some of my closest musical partners and friends. Two of my soul brothers since I was 14 years old: Aaron Chan - who helped to produce and arrange the album (it was recorded mixed and mastered in his home studio in Truckee), and who contributes piano, keys, and samples to almost all the songs; and Josh Kamler, who sings lead vocals on "I Like You Better", and graciously authored the album artwork. Erik Johnson, my partner and bandmate in our Truckee-based musical collaborative - The Johnson Party - sings vocals on several tracks, and co-wrote "One Last Time" with me. The incredibly talented Matt Reiter (also in the Johnson Party) plays bass on almost all tracks. The legendary Lorenzo Worster (also in the Johnson Party, and whom I have known since I was born!) is on percussion. The talented Crystal Boutelle, from Steel Sparrows, contributes vocals. And the incredible Eric “Doc” Smith lends some of his ZenDrum skills to a song or two. We really hope you enjoy this creative expression - it truly comes from the heart!
